RIVAGES, video of the week

RIVAGES from SOCIAL ANIMALS on Vimeo.
RIVAGES is a new film by Guillaume Cagniard returning to JR's project completed this summer 2014 in the secluded port of Le Havre, France. The port is run by only men, dockers that inherit the profession from their fathers. The film pays tribute to these men who worked hard to make the largest pasting in the world, to bring the first woman's eyes to the port, and to send the eyes to travel the seas of the world to Malaysia.

Blackout City, video of the week

Blackout City from Nicholas Buer on Vimeo.

In a metropolis like London light pollution makes the night sky invisible. Only a few of the brightest stars and asterisms force their celestial light through the man made glow of the city. The night sky, one of the most beautiful of natural wonders is extinguished from view. Blackout City is an experimental timelapse film that makes the invisible, visible. It attempts to show what the night sky would look like If there were ever to be a total blackout in the South East of England on a clear, moonless, summers night.

I started shooting this project back in August 2013 and have been slowly gathering footage when conditions were right. Although each shot in this film is a composite, all footage is real. The city shots were captured during the day and processed to look like night and the night sky shots were captured from dark locations around the South of England to ensure that the stars are astronomically correct for the latitude of London. I have also processed the astro shots to be more sympathetic to what the naked eye would see in terms of saturation and detail. The internet is saturated with well-processed images of the Milky Way that show phenomenal colour that are the result of fantastic low light DSLR technology. Don’t get me wrong I love these images, I am one of the people who endeavours to create them! But in reality the Milky Way does not look like this; so in order to make this film more believable I have chosen to process the shots this way.

I first got the idea for the film when I read an article about a blackout in LA in 1994 where people called 911 reporting these strange clouds floating in the sky, those clouds where in fact the Milky Way. It made me think about how the lights from cities have made many of us lose our connection to the night sky. We live in a fast paced man-made world whereby it is all too easy for us to become disconnected from the natural world around us, isolated from what is actually real. There are many other aspects of the human condition that this film could touch upon which could make its’ intentions appear somewhat complicated, but is essence the film's agenda could not be more simple; to inspire people to get away from the city lights, go somewhere quiet on a star-filled night and simply look up.

This project is purely non-profit but I would love the opportunity take the Blackout City idea to different metropolises across the globe as each city with it's specific latitude will reveal a different sky. Plug, video of the week

PLUG - SHORT FILM from vyle-art on Vimeo.
Directorial debut from internationally renowned designer and concept artist, David Levy (Tron legacy, Prometheus, Ender's Game, Tomorrowland, Avatar2). The short film is the first 15 minutes of a science fiction TV series Levy has outlined and hopes to film. Unlike the highly VFX-ed science fiction films inundating audiences today, PLUG is a return to 1970's classics like Star Wars and Mad Max with a gritty universe made from mostly live props and real life settings.

"On a post-apocalyptic Earth, Leila Dawn (Natalie Floyd), is the only human survivor. Raised by Robots after humanity abandoned the planet they destroyed with nuclear warfare, Leila cannot forget her parents nor ignore her yearning to find other organic life. A hunt she sets out on with a Military Unit, Marker (Lex Cassar), leads Leila to discover the reality she’s been denied—a reality that sparks her ultimate quest."

Several years ago, we visited artist David Sena's studio to peep behind the curtain and find out about his unique process. Sena (who has given a few CH staff members tattoos in the past) creates large-scale artworks using an unusual method: the Cooper Union graduate "paints" almost exclusively using fireworks. The results are fantastic. The artist translates rough burn marks and leftover trails from smoke bombs into mesmerizing pieces that viewers would never believe were born from roadside explosives. We donned respirators and went back to visit Sena—and finally capture his work on film.

Scientists at MIT have traced 13 billion years of galaxy evolution, from shortly after the Big Bang to the present day. Burglars of Media, 1971 documentary (trailer video)

1971 Trailer -  (video above)

In '1971,' an analog precursor to NSA, Snowden - Yahoo News: "...The burglars of Media, who anonymously mailed copies of the stolen documents to three newspapers, were never caught. "1971" was made in tandem with a book by Betty Medsger, "The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover's Secret FBI," published earlier this year. (Medsger was the Washington Post reporter who broke the story in 1971.) At the publication of the book, five of the eight revealed their identities and they're featured on camera in the film. (They likely can no longer be tried for the break-in.) Led by then-Haverford College physics professor Bill Davidon (who died last year), they're a collection of regular citizens, including a cab driver and a social worker. Two of them, Bonnie and John Raines, had three kids at the time. With family photos and old video, "1971" presents the burglars not as political firebrands, but as typical Americans. "They're ordinary Americans who decided to take a stand," says Hamilton, a producer of the Oscar-nominated documentary "Pray the Devil Back to Hell."..."

A Rising Tide, The India Surf Story (video)

A Rising Tide- The India Surf Story from The Shaka Surf Club on Vimeo.

'A Rising Tide' is a short documentary surf film, created by Indian surfer/filmmaker trio Tushar Pathiyan, Ishita Malaviya and Krish Makhija in association with Quiksilver India.

In a country with a population of 1.2 billion and just over a hundred surfers, the film sets out to explore the journey of some of India’s pioneer surfers, their humble surf beginnings and their deep connection with the ocean.

Through interviews with local watermen we celebrate the joy of riding waves and the aloha spirit of the Indian surf tribe. As the numbers of surfers in the country keep growing each day, we hope that these stories may never be lost and shall help create a deeper sense of surf community in India.

The first documentary surf film to come out of India, ‘A Rising Tide’ features pioneer surfers Mukesh Panjanathan, Jack ‘Swami’ Hebner, Velu Murugan, Satyaraj Das, Tushar Pathiyan, Ishita Malaviya, Kishore Kumar, Kiran Kumar, Spandan Banerjee, Rahul Malaney, Shamanth Kumar, Murthy Megavan, Melville Anthony Smythe, Kalyan Raithi, Hari Varma, D. Anudeep and Nissam Yoshikawa.

Thanks to Varoon Nair, The Mavyns, The Supersonics and Dhruv Visvanath for composing original music for the film.

Thanks to Quiksilver India for their support of this film.

Red Bull Stratos, Felix Baumgartner, The Full Story

GoPro: Red Bull Stratos - The Full Story - Published on Jan 31, 2014

October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner ascended more than 24 miles above Earth's surface to the edge of space in a stratospheric balloon. Millions across the globe watched as he opened the door of the capsule, stepped off the platform, and broke the speed of sound while free falling safely back to Earth. Felix set three world records that day—and inspired us all to reach beyond the limits of our own realities, and reimagine our potential to achieve the incredible.

GoPro was honored to be a part of this epic achievement, with seven HERO2 cameras documenting every moment. From the airless freeze of outer space, to the record-breaking free fall and momentous return to ground—see it all through Felix's eyes as captured by GoPro, and experience this incredible mission like never before. No one gets you closer than this.

Ancients, timelapse video

Ancients from Nicholas Buer on Vimeo.

This film follows the ancient cycle of sunset, to night, to sunrise. A continuous loop of perpetual movement that has been unbroken since the dawn of time, and the only true constant in our lives.

I shot this film over 12 days around the San Pedro de Atacama region of Northern Chile. San Pedro is an oasis town in the Atacama and sits at an altitude of 2600m. The town is a great base to explore the fascinating landscapes that surround it, and everything just goes up and up.

The Atacama is well-known for what are arguably the cleanest, darkest skies on Earth. The dry air adds an extra transparency and this coupled with the altitude creates a night sky like no other. I visited at a time when Venus was situated quite close to the centre of the Milky Way; an astronomical event that only takes place every 8 years or so. I also timed my visit with the Autumn equinox which is a good time of year to capture Zodiacal light; the celestial phenomenon caused by sunlight scattering interplanetary space dust in the Zodiacal cloud. It stretches across the ecliptic and glows for a short while after sunset like a UFO beam and I was lucky enough to witness this every night I stepped out into the dark.

In my opinion an adventure is not complete unless there are challenges, and this trip was no different. My luggage was lost for the first 6 days I was there so for half of my trip I had no tripods and no motion control equipment. I shot many time-lapses in this film with my cameras on buckets weighted down with rocks! it was far from ideal but I was determined not to miss an opportunity to capture this wonderful sky. I battled through with little food and less sleep, language barriers and I even broke down in the middle of nowhere at one point, but at least the sunset was nice that evening! I found the Atacama to be a very harsh landscape; the dry air makes your skin crack and split, the winds pummel you with every gust and the altitude slows you down and affects your ability to hike with heavy equipment. By the end of this trip me, my kit and my car had taken a real battering but it was all worth it, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

Wheel Of Life from Andre&Markus (video)

Wheel Of Life from Andre&Markus on Vimeo.
Paper is one of the most versatile and beautiful mediums available to makers, able to create and reproduce entire worlds at the cut of a blade. After years of experience perfecting this craft, The Makerie Studio teamed up with Director André Gidoin to magically bring one of these worlds to life, by creating and filming a hand made paper Zoetrope.

A zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures. Often referred to as the Wheel Of Life, we were inspired to tell the story of one zoetrope in particular, that one night came to life.

All filmed in camera, the horses on the carousel are spaced to spin in sync with the camera’s frame rate to create the illusion of motion. Each horse is carefully studied to follow the one before it, so that once at speed they appear to be galloping.

The zoetrope was filmed surrounded by a multitude of smaller carousels, all hand made for The Makerie Studio’s New York launch.

DESERT.ASH, Reubyn Ash 2012

DESERT.ASH -- Reubyn Ash 2012

Monster Energy Presents a film by Tim Boydell and Reubyn Ash, documenting 3, 50 degree, dusty days at the Wadi Adventure Wave Pool in Al Ain near Dubai. In what is regarded as 'one of the best wave pools in the world', Reubyn Ash Had three days to see what he could do. Nestled in the foot hills of the Jebel Hafeet mountain range, the Wadi Adventure Wave Pool set the scene for 3 days of non-stop surfing in this rare and unique location. What is truly possible when nature is set to one side and instinct is replaced with passion, determination and skill? Tim Boydell and Monster Energy's Reubyn Ash set about documenting their adventure into the Arabian desert with this question in mind. If actions speak louder than words then Reubyn's surfing speaks for itself. Reubyn Ash "one of the oddest things was losing the 'random' not surfing by instinct and momentary changes in the sea, it actually made surfing this wave harder!...but once you had the wave dialled in...the possibilities felt endless. I just wish I could go back for a week!" (Published on Sep 7, 2012)
