Dishonored - Chapter 1

Video of the Day: Dishonored - Chapter 1 from Psyop on Vimeo.

For the highly anticipated multi-platform title "Dishonored," Psyop and ROKKAN created an engrossing prequel series for Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios. The online series gives gamers a first-hand glimpse into the steampunk-inspired, shadowy whaling city of Dunwall, where plague is rampant and the city is in disarray and on the verge of dystopia.

ROKKAN and Psyop worked very closely with Bethesda Softworks to create a look and feel that was truly unique. Inspiration was taken from the artistic feel of the game as established by Arkane Studios, but with a twist.

The three webisodes were predominantly produced by hand. Each frame was essentially a fully rendered style frame, which was then enhanced with 3D elements to add to the painterly atmosphere, dimension and depth of each shot.

“Usually when we animate, it is largely a CG production” said Psyop creative director Jon Saunders. “After we saw the story line, we decided to draw each style frame thirty or forty times and create a cell animated look and give it a sort of a painting-come-to-life effect."

The prequels, although stylistically different from Dishonored the game, accurately portray the story of Dunwall and showcase the fantasy worlds that Psyop is known for creating.

“After vetting several animation studios, Psyop stood out because they understood the story we were trying to tell. They were the only studio who could really bring the stories to life with their world renown animation precision and craft," said Charles Bae, Chief Creative Officer, ROKKAN. "Bethesda and ROKKAN's approach to the prequels was to give context to the oppressive world of Dishonored, establishing the story up to the point of the player's immersion at the start of the game. Our primary objective was to tell a great story in the simplest and most compelling format we could, period," added Bae.

The official release, scheduled for October 9th, is already getting strong advance reviews and is set to be a smash hit for the fall.

Listen to the heart of Tuscany from Gunther Machu on Vimeo.

One of my favorite places on earth - the heart of the Tuscany in Italy, from a macro perspective. No music, just the sounds of little life in a fantastic atmosphere.

A big "Thank you" goes to my friend and fellow filmmaker Nino Leitner, who encouraged me to upload the film as is without music.

Shot over the course of 14 days, searching for those moments where everything aligns. Field recordings with a ZOOM H2, other ressources included freesound.org.

At a later stage, I will most probably share an alternate version with specifically composed music as well.

Audi RS Moments of Truth - 2001: TFSI

Video of the day: Audi RS Moments of Truth - 2001: TFSI

Audi RS "Moments of Truth" is a series of highly stylized, dynamic short-form documentaries that capture a moment in time -- visual, visceral proof of the impact that technological innovation and risk-taking has had on performance in a highly competitive world.

This film tells the story of how FSI technology led to the Audi Joest R8 victory at the 2001 24 Hours of LeMans. Tom Kristensen tells the story from the driver's perspective and Jo Hausner tells the story from the race engineer's perspective. Through their dramatic stories the films conveys how the team went into the 2001 race knowing FSI technology would give them significant fuel efficiencies and performance advantages that ultimately helped them overcome the grueling elements and torrential rain of the 2001 24 Hours of LeMans. The story then links the motor sports moment of truth to a story of modern-day FSI implementation and refinement in the RS 5. Through engineer Christian Brinkmann the piece brings to life visual, technological proof of TFSI (combustion chamber, V8 engine, etc.) at quattro GmbH, and through specific track footage of the RS 5.

The Cats of Mars Meet the Toy Car

Video of the Day: The Cats of Mars Meet the Toy Car (complete short) from Jacob Stålhammar on Vimeo.

I wrote the Cats on Mars in 2004. Later I recorded the Swedish singer Freddie Wadling reading the story (with no clear plan as to make a children's book or maybe a film). I started playing around with public domain music found in old commercials at the Prelinger archives.

After testing polished (and wider) looks, I instead aimed for an old school 4:3 ratio, to match the Dr Seuss inspired rhyming, adding grain and noises.
I tried learning gouache on cardboard from http://johnkstuff.blogspot.se/search/label/BG%20Painting , in parallel I started character design http://jacobstalhammar.blogspot.se/2009/10/marskatterna-tidiga-skisser.html .
Looping old (as old as from the 1930's) sounds, and making snippets that moved together with Freddie's wonderful reading provided energy to continue.

After the Swedish version opened at Göteborg International Film Festival 2010, I translated everything and contacted my friend Jeff Crackower with discussions of the rhyming. He provided great help – and later dubbed the English version in a wonderful session.

Both versions played in festivals, and the Swedish version played in cinemas distributed by Folket’s Bio. The Swedish version still plays in cinemas and a DVD for libraries is released this fall.

The Art of Animation and Motion Graphics

Video of the Day: The Art of Animation and Motion Graphics

Published on Aug 23, 2012 by PBSoffbook

Animation has been captivating audiences for more than a hundred years. From classic forms like hand drawn and stop-motion, to cutting-edge techniques like motion graphics and CGI, animation has a long history of creating style and poetry unachievable through live action filmmaking. It is a tool for educating, a place for experimentation and play, and a way of telling personal stories that reach the viewer with powerful visual metaphors.

David Pogue: "On August 15, 2012, I proposed to the love of my life. I made a fake movie trailer -- a thinly veiled version of our love story. I persuaded the movie theater at a summer resort to play it before a movie we went to see. Both of our families were there to see it. I hid a video camera to capture her reaction (it was in a ficus plant next to the screen). Here's how it happened!"
